Nola Blue Revue Biography

Nola Blue Records celebrates a decade of blues with the Nola Blue Revue, a showcase of the three veterans of the label who embody the rich tradition of the blues.  Trudy Lynn, Lil’ Jimmy Reed and Benny Turner deliver a deep, soulful, unforgettable down-home blues experience.

TRUDY LYNN:

“With a voice that easily transitions from barroom growl to uptown sass and sophisticated soul, her special blend of blues, R&B, and soul has won over crowds from sweaty Houston juke joints to massive European festivals.” – Rod Evans, Living Blues Magazine

  • Born Lee Audrey Nelms in Houston’s Fifth Ward, Trudy Lynn comes from strong musical stock. Albert Collins was the first to get her on the stage while still in high school, and after singing ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ and ‘Money,’ Lynn knew she had found her calling.
  • During her association with Atlanta-based Ichiban Records, Lynn released five albums. After several European releases that followed, she joined Connor Ray Music, where her acclaimed Royal Oaks Blues Café (2013) reached #1 on the Billboard Blues Chart. Three more albums followed. A 16-time Blues Music Award nominee, Lynn received two career-defining awards in 2019: the Living Legend Blues Award from the Houston Blues Society and the Jus’ Blues Music Foundation’s Willie Mitchell Lifetime Artist Award. Now signed to Nola Blue Records, Trudy Lynn is the reigning Golden Girl, named after the title of her latest album released in 2022               Trudy Lynn Facebook Page.

  • LIL’ JIMMY REED:

“Lil’ Jimmy Reed may be one of the last of his generation still playing, but he still has more than enough to say.” – Ben Macnair, Blues Matters

Lil’ Jimmy Reed is among the last of the original Louisiana bluesmen.  Born Leon Atkins in Hardwood, Louisiana in 1938 and growing up across from a Chitlin’ Circuit club, he was exposed to the music of the early blues masters at a young age and cut his teeth on the Baton Rouge music scene soon after his father bought him his first guitar at age 16. He earned his Lil’ Jimmy Reed moniker after being called to fill in for the iconic Jimmy Reed one night, and the rest is history. In addition to being a triple threat on vocals, guitar and harmonica, he is also a veteran, having served 20 years in the U.S. military. Since returning to civilian life, his career has blossomed. Lil’ Jimmy has shared the stage with B. B. King and Bobby “Blue” Bland, and headlined festivals across Europe, in the UK, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Israel and Russia

BENNY TURNER:

“To listen to – and talk with – Benny Turner is to be in the presence of living blues history.”– Melanie Young, Living Blues Magazine

Born in Gilmer, Texas in 1939 and growing up in Chicago, Benny Turner grew up surrounded by the blues. Now, after more than 60 years in the music business, performing gospel, R&B, soul and blues everywhere from the Chitlin Circuit to the Apollo Theater to the far reaches of the globe, he has taken his rightful place on center stage.  A career sideman to iconic musicians such as Dee Clark, The Soul Stirrers, Mighty Joe Young, Marva Wright-Blues Queen of New Orleans, and his brother the late Freddie King, Benny is a shining star in the blues world.  Singer, songwriter, producer and author, Benny’s work is highly-acclaimed and second only to his electrifying live shows.  One taste of his authentic blues will leave you wanting more!
