A vibrant community, a beautiful city.
The city is situated in the center of Lancaster County, and its seven square miles are packed with art, museums, historical attractions, numerous award winning independent restaurants and cafes, theatres, shops and boutiques.
A great deal of Lancaster city’s charm stems from the stories, architecture, and traditions rooted in its rich history. Lancaster is one of the oldest inland cities in the country. Central Market is the oldest continuously run market in the United States. The Continental Congress met in Lancaster for a day during the Revolutionary War when they left Philadelphia fleeing the advancing British.
Escaped slaves from the south came through Lancaster on the Underground Railroad. Noted Abolitionist Thaddeus Stevens was a U.S. Congressman during the Presidency of Abraham Lincoln, who lived in Lancaster with his African American confidante, (Some say partner) Lydia Hamilton Smith. They shared a home at 45 S. Queen St. which is a historic site and is currently being renovated into a museum. Thaddeus Stevens is buried in the Shreiner Concord Cemetery at the corner of N. Mulberry St. and W. Chestnut St. in Lancaster.
With multiple examples of Victorian architecture and its many trees, Lancaster is a beautiful city to explore by walking.
