King Street Big Band

Lancaster Roots & Blues RETURNS - Friday, Saturday & Sunday, Sept 27, 28 & 29

Big Band Swing & Jazz

Founded and directed by Kate Umble Smucker, KSBB was inspired by Kate’s time playing with The New Jazz Order Big Band in Kansas City, a band that got together weekly to read new compositions and the classic big band repertoire. After moving to Lancaster, Kate missed the camaraderie and challenge of playing in a “reading band” and she knew the Lancaster jazz scene had the top notch musicians needed for this kind of group. With the help of many – Gene Clark, Joy Devoy and Randi Stauffer (to name a FEW), KSBB was born in the spring of 2014.

As an ensemble, KSBB seeks to promote and preserve the classic big band repertoire while also forging ahead and enjoying the new directions and possibilities that the big band instrumentation affords. The performance at 2016 Lancaster Roots and Blues will include a premiere of a piece for big band by Lancaster composer Rusty Banks.
